What it is
The Shark Navigator Lift-Away is an upright vacuum with a HEPA filter, sold as a sealed system. The item we link to (model NV356E) comes with a dusting brush and crevice tool and is marketed for pet hair, carpet and hard floors. The "Lift-Away" name refers to a detachable canister for stairs and furniture.
A vacuum doesn't treat allergies. It removes settled allergen — dust mite droppings, pet dander, pollen tracked indoors — from floors and furniture. The HEPA filter and seals are there so fine particles stay inside the machine instead of blowing out the exhaust. Check the manual for how often to wash or replace the filters.
How well it works
What guidelines say: the U.S. allergy practice parameter on dust mites recommends regular vacuuming with a HEPA-filtered vacuum, or a central vacuum that vents outside. It says carpeted homes need vacuuming at least weekly. It also notes that vacuuming removes mite allergen but not live mites PMID: 24267359.
What trials show: no trials show that vacuuming by itself improves allergy symptoms. A systematic review of indoor allergen reduction for asthma found that single interventions generally didn't improve asthma measures. Programs combining several steps that included HEPA vacuums did reduce asthma attacks and improve quality of life (moderate strength of evidence) PMID: 29452202. The vacuum was one ingredient, not the whole recipe.
The catch: vacuuming stirs up allergen
This is the main downside, and it applies to every vacuum:
- Exposure rises while you vacuum. The practice parameter says allergic people ideally shouldn't vacuum at all, because allergen exposure rises during vacuuming and when the dust container is emptied PMID: 24267359.
- Mite allergen settles fairly fast. Mite particles are heavy and mostly settle within 20 to 30 minutes of being disturbed PMID: 24267359. Leaving the room during and after vacuuming makes sense. Pet dander is lighter and can stay in the air longer.
- Masks are reasonable but unproven. An N95 during dusty chores seems reasonable, but there's no evidence to formally recommend it PMID: 24267359.
- Empty it outdoors. Emptying the dust container releases a puff of fine dust. Do it outside, ideally by someone who isn't allergic.
Vacuum vs. air purifier
They tackle different parts of the problem. A vacuum picks up allergen that has settled. A HEPA air purifier like the Levoit Core 300S or Coway Mighty pulls allergen out of the air. Air purifier evidence is mixed too: a placebo-controlled trial found a HEPA cleaner lowered airborne cat allergen but didn't improve symptoms PMID: 9655716. For dust mites, a mattress encasement and weekly bedding washes target the bed, the biggest reservoir.
Who should buy it
Buy it if you're replacing an old vacuum that leaks dust, you have carpet and pets, and someone who isn't allergic can do most of the vacuuming.
Skip it if you're buying it only for allergy relief. Cheaper steps like washing bedding weekly and encasing the mattress should come first. If your home is mostly hard floors, a damp mop picks up dust without stirring it into the air.
